5 dead, 25 injured as Kanchanjungha Express collides with goods train in Bengal, rescue ops on

Five people were killed and at least 25 were injured as the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjungha Express collided with a goods train on Monday morning near West Bengal’s New Jalpaiguri. Two coaches of the train were derailed.

“Five people, including the driver of Kanchenjunga Express, died on the spot while 25 were injured, Abhishek Roy, Additional SP Kurseong said. He said that the police was trying to rescue those stuck.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to X to express her shock over the incident and said that rescue and relief operations were underway. “Shocked to learn, just now, about a tragic train accident, in Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district. While details are awaited, Kanchenjunga Express has reportedly been hit by a goods train. DM, SP, doctors, ambulances and disaster teams have been rushed to the site for rescue, recovery, medical assistance. Action on war-footing initiated,” Banerjee said.
